What is piling setting out?
Piling setting out is the survey work that establishes exactly where each pile goes, carried out alongside the rig rather than finished before it arrives. Working from the piling layout drawing and the site control network, the engineer surveys the piling mat against the design, sets out and pins each pile position, and marks every rebar cage with its pile number. The pins are surveyed and checked before each pile is driven, and once it's installed the top of the cage is surveyed and checked against design. It's the step that turns a piling design on paper into accurately positioned, verified foundations in the ground.
Why pile position accuracy matters
Piles carry the building. Their positions are calculated so that pile caps, ground beams and columns line up and loads transfer as the structural engineer intended. Install a pile off-position and that chain of assumptions is disturbed — the pile cap may need redesigning, the eccentricity may exceed what the design allows, and additional piles may be required to compensate. Piling tolerances are tight for exactly this reason, and meeting them starts with accurate setting out.
The real cost of a pile in the wrong place
A piling rig is one of the most expensive resources on any site. When a position is wrong — or when there's no clear, checked set-out for the rig to work to — the rig waits while it's sorted, and standing time is charged by the hour. Behind that sit the costs of remedial piles, redesigned pile caps and the programme delay that pushes back every follow-on package. An accurate set-out, checked before the rig arrives, is a small cost against any one of those outcomes.
Setting out, verification and as-built pile records
Good piling setting out doesn't end when the pegs go in. Positions should be checked independently before piling starts, and once piles are installed an as-built survey records where they actually ended up. That as-built record earns its place: it confirms the piles are within tolerance, gives the structural engineer what they need to finalise pile cap details, and provides a defensible record if a position is ever questioned.
