What's the difference between an IFC model and a Revit or ArchiCAD model?

Revit and ArchiCAD are native authoring platforms. An IFC model is an open, software-agnostic format exported from either, which can be opened in Revit, ArchiCAD, Navisworks and other BIM platforms.

Do you produce IFC models from ArchiCAD?

Yes — a large proportion of the architects we work with use ArchiCAD, which exports natively to IFC, so this is one of our most common routes to an IFC deliverable.

Why would I need an IFC model as well as a Revit or ArchiCAD model?

If your project involves consultants using different BIM software, or your Employer's Information Requirements specify IFC, an IFC export ensures everyone can work with the same coordinated model regardless of platform.

Which IFC version do you deliver?

IFC2x3 or IFC4 depending on your project requirements — let us know at the quotation stage.

Is this compliant with ISO 19650?

Our modelling workflow is set up to align with ISO 19650 information management principles; we're happy to work to your project's specific BIM Execution Plan.

IFC MODELS

IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is an open, vendor-neutral BIM file format that can be opened and coordinated across different software packages — Revit, ArchiCAD, Navisworks, Solibri and others — rather than being tied to one platform. AKN produces IFC models from laser scan point cloud data, most commonly via ArchiCAD, which a large proportion of architects work in and which exports to IFC natively, and also as an export from a Revit model built as part of a Scan to BIM project.
