A site engineer is responsible for the technical delivery of a construction project on site. This includes setting out structures, drainage, roads and services from design drawings and BIM models; completing Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) and Inspection & Test Records (ITRs); carrying out QA checks and as-built verification; liaising with the design team; and ensuring the build is delivered accurately and in accordance with the specification. AKN Engineering's site engineers are qualified to handle the full scope of technical site management from day one.

A setting out engineer focuses specifically on transferring design data onto the ground — marking positions, levels and alignments using total stations and GNSS equipment. A site engineer has a broader role that includes setting out but also covers QA, ITP and ITR completion, design liaison, programme monitoring and technical problem-solving. At AKN Engineering, all our engineers are qualified in both disciplines — they can set out and manage the full technical site engineering function.

An Inspection & Test Plan (ITP) is a quality management document that defines the inspection and testing requirements for a specific element of work — including who is responsible, what is checked, when and to what standard. An Inspection & Test Record (ITR) is the completed record proving that inspection has taken place and the work meets the required standard. AKN Engineering's site engineers complete, sign off and maintain ITPs and ITRs to the standard required by Tier 1 and Tier 2 main contractors.
